The Aquatic Biosphere Project is working with regional dive clubs and the Alberta Underwater Council in lake bottom clean-up efforts by volunteers. A long standing effort by volunteer divers across the province, the Aquatic Biosphere conservation section is getting involved to catalogue and measure the waste retrieved for data collection and analysis.
In understanding what is being tossed into our lakes, better public messaging can be created for resident and recreational users of our waterways.
It also presents an opportunity to get a cleared picture of the potential toxins that may be leaking into the waterways from abandoned vehicles, household appliances, and other items found. The Biosphere’s drone is sometimes deployed to get a better sense of what our lake bottoms look like and what has been dropped in them.
These pictures are from a beautiful day at Sylvan Lake on Sunday September 22, 2019.
